Where do you get the 411? How about from the mouths of babes! This spring, Creston Arts is launching a four-session after-school program where elementary students will learn the ropes of the newspaper industry and create a publication of their very own.
Why community journalism matters
At its heart, journalism provides citizens with the information they need to make good decisions for themselves and their communities, and is essential for a functioning democracy. It documents a towns' history for future generations. Like other reliable ways of knowing, such as science, journalism is a process that rewards truth-telling, corrects mistakes, and punishes fraud.
What we will learn
A good journalist follows a code of ethics. Those who enroll in Journalism Camp will learn to:
-
Seek truth and report it: Let's write with honesty, fairness and accuracy
-
Verify information, clearly identify sources, never plagiarize, and how journalism holds those in power accountable for their actions.
-
-
"Think before we speak (or write!) and minimize harm and treat everyone with respect
-
Some people say, "The truth hurts," but we're going to learn how to talk and write about people with compassion. When we tell stories we have to think about who may be impacted.
-
-
Become independent thinkers who serve the public.
-
We're going to learn what it means to "remain neutral." Not only does it make us a better friend, but it makes us great journalists! We're going to learn what it means to live and work with integrity.
-
-
Sometimes we make mistakes and that's OK! (As long as we own them and correct them). At Journalism Camp we're going to learn about personal accountability, talk about what it means to be transparent, and why these are critical to being the best kind of journalist.
